Khumjung is the oldest and largest Sherpa village in the Everest Region. Known as the "Green Valley" on account of all the roofs being painted green, the local people still follow a traditional agricultural lifestyle and many of the men work as climbing and trekking guides during the trekking season. Khumjung monastery is home to the famous yeti scalp and Khumjung shool is the first school to have been built by Sir Edmund Hillary, where a statue stands in his memory.
